Interrupting your Cyber Monday to share a different kind of post tonight. In the hustle and bustle that this season brings, I wanted to take a moment and jot down a few ways that we can shift our focus from buying presents to being present. First, let me say that there is absolutely no shame in taking advantage of the sales, deals, and all of the shopping that takes place- in fact, I’ll be sharing some gift guides in just a few days- and it’s no secret that I love to shop. However, I often find myself overwhelmed and playing a constant game of ‘catch up’ when December rolls around, and just wanted to take a minute to align my heart and set some intentions as we head into this busy month. If you can relate, I hope you’ll find this post helpful.
Celebrate the Little Things // A cozy bed to sleep in, a good cup of coffee in the morning, listening to your favorite playlist, having a car to drive. When life is crazy, days are flying by, and the to-do list is never-ending, it’s important to realize that appreciating even the tiniest things cultivates gratitude, which ensures a better perspective in general.
Quality over quantity // Put some thought into the gifts you give, rather than just getting what is convenient. There is nothing wrong with giving expensive gifts, but it’s not the only option. Be in the moment, pump the brakes, and allow yourself to connect with the recipient by thinking about what is meaningful to them. Sentimental gifts are always my go-to and give me the opportunity to embrace what the season is really about.
Stay off Social Media // It’s ironic that my entire job is social media, yet I’m suggesting that you get away from it. That’s because it is absolutely draining, and taking a break every now and then is healthy. It’s not hard to compare yourself to strangers on any given day, but especialllllllyyyy during this time of year when everyone is sharing picture-perfect photos of their Christmas trees, and all the things they are buying. Also, remind yourself that social media is not reality- it’s a well developed, thoroughly planned highlight reel of our best moments. Try setting small goals, like no phones at dinner to be really intentional about quality time.
Take time to get to know your family // The holidays are great because we often see family that we haven’t seen in a while. And while it should be amazing to see loved ones, there’s also a chance it may be awkward to see family members that you haven’t seen in years. I challenge you to embrace the awkward. Put your phone away, and take the time to talk to your family (groundbreaking, I know) Over Thanksgiving, I visited my grandparents in Vegas and really spent the time to talk to them. I asked them about their favorite childhood traditions, what they remembered about the holidays as kids, and what they are looking forward to in the new year. Truly priceless conversations that I will always cherish.
Commit an Act of Service // One of the best ways to be present, is to take the focus off yourself. Serve someone else and treat it like a privilege. Of course, volunteering at a homeless shelter will not go unappreciated, but the gesture doesn’t have to be that grand. Pay for someone’s coffee. Let someone go ahead of you in line. Pay someone a compliment, and strike up a conversation with a stranger. Embrace the feeling and happiness of being in that moment.
Like I said- shop to your heart’s content, there is nothing wrong with enjoying that part of the Holidays (I certainly do!) But it’s only natural the feel the burn-out eventually. Taking a moment to check in with ourselves, and shift our priorities to what’s really important during this time can make all the difference. Thanks for reading, Lei Loves! xo
